Biodegradable plastics, which are environmentally friendly products, become a world popular R&D topic, and can lead to tremendous business opportunities.
ecovio® is a high-quality and versatile bioplastic of BASF. The main areas of use for ecovio® are plastic films such as organic waste bags, dual-use bags (first for shopping, then for organic waste) or agricultural mulch films. Furthermore, compostable packaging solutions such as paper-coating, shrink films, foam packaging and injection molding products can be produced with ecovio®.

Grabio Greentech Corporation will exhibit its Grabio 100% biodegradable/compostable starch plastics. Unlike conventional plastics that require hundreds of years to disintegrate, Grabio can be biodegraded by microorganisms into CO2 and water completely within months under nature environment. GRABIO uses renewable raw material like cornstarch to save petroleum and tree consumption. When being incinerated, Grabio releases half of heat energy and CO2 than conventional plastics, helping to slow down global warming. Grabio meets EN 13432 and ASTM D6400 compostable standards, and have received compostable certificates from EU, U.S.A., and Japan.
Packaging automation accelerated as energy- efficient new technologies keeps springing up
Facing structural labour shortages, production costs in China are rapidly rising. CHINAPLAS 2016 is putting on its largest ever parade of energy efficient and intelligentization technologies for automation.
AE-900-TS is Akei's newly launched product – a long stroke All Electric Blow Molding Machine. With all machine movements driven by Siemens servo motor and Lim-Tec linear actuators, the AE-900-TS offers not only highest possible repeatability but also a number of benefits. These include lower noise, reduced power consumption, and contamination to finished product caused by oil leakage is eliminated. Like most Akei machines the AE-900-TS is meant for fully automatic production allowing direct connection with downstream equipment such as leak testing, filling, labeling and packing.
ZQ-B2500-2 is ZQ Machinery's newly designed full automatic blow molding machine for handled bottle production. In ZQ-B2500-2 blow molding machine operating, after preform being loaded and positioned, with the help of servo motor positioning device, handles can be accurately positioned in mold, and realizes full automatic production for handle bottles.
Milacron Plastic Machinery will introduce its ELEKTRON Series. Compare to the hydraulic injection molding machine, this model uses 60 percent less energy and 90 percent less water; dynamics parallel movements for optimal cycle times; precision exceptional part quality with excellent mold protection thanks to stroke accuracy of 0.01 mm; productivity minimal rejects with maximum repeatability and machine availability.
In-mold labeling is very much in the ascendant
With its potentials to improve the appearance of product packaging, anti-forgery functions and degree of automation, in-mold labelling is a focus of attention of brand owners as well as packaging companies.
Acmeplas System Technologies, Ltd. (Shanghai) will be showing in CHINAPLAS its 8 cavity IML injection packaging system which achieves the automation of all the processes from operation through packaging to packing and sealing in a sterile and dust free environment, ensuring product quality while saving time, energy consumption and labour costs.
Arburg will present Allrounder, an injection molding machine with a hybrid package structure for the application of thin wall in packaging. The Hidrive series of high-performance injection molding machines are not only energy saving, but also highly productive, applying 2 + 2 stack mold cavity to IML applications. Compared with regular 4-cavity molds, using stacking technology, 2 + 2 cavity stack molds can be used on smaller machines. With a clamping force of 1.800 kN, the hybrid Allrounder 570 H produces four 200-ml butter containers in a cycle time of 3.2 seconds.
Keeping up with the demand for multifunctional plastic packaging
Lightweight materials are rising stars in plastic packaging, as companies strive to reduce the weights and thickness of their products without sacrificing performance and functionality.
Xinle Huabao Plastic Machinery will introduce its plastic extrusion cast film line. This line adopts seven layer coextrusion technology with different properties of raw materials for each layer so as to realize the film weight loss, simultaneously gain more excellent puncture resistance, higher tensile strength and impact resistance, especially the film is suitable for high-speed winding machine in flow line production. Experiments proved that the machine rolls stretch film produced by this line is 20% weight loss compared with ordinary machine rolls with the same film properties.
Kuraray will introduce EVOH high barrier resin, which provide excellent barrier against gases and flavors; provide excellent chemical resistance; and are used in multilayer structure.
The natural and white high impact polystyrene (HIPS) regrinds and rolls from Custom Polymers Hong Kong Limited come with an EVOH lamination. Natural and white materials are packed separately, with EVOH amounting to about 15%.
Other hot technologies to be seen at CHINAPLAS 2016 include polyethylene (PE) films and biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) films for flexible packaging, high-speed computer controlled automatic bag making machines, injection molding machines for high-cycle thin pieces of food packaging equipment, 12-metre slitter machines, single-run molding systems that incorporate injection molding, labelling and removal, and many more.

In its more than 30 years of development, the packaging industry has seen the emergence of new products and technologies which have contributed to its growth worldwide, a historical process also witnessed by CHINAPLAS as the latter get ready to enter its four decades of operation. CHINAPLAS 2016 – the 30th China International Exhibition on Plastics and Rubber Industries, the number one in Asia and number two in the world – will be held in Shanghai New International Expo Centre, PR China from 25 to 28 April, 2016.
Over 1,400 out of the 3,300 plus exhibitors in the 240,000 sqm exhibition area are going to showcase raw materials and technology which are applicable in the packaging industry. Leading names in the industry will be staging their latest equipment, materials, technologies and solutions in this world class event, supporting packaging companies in their pursuit of a sustainable competitive edge.
